I would be SO VERY GRATEFUL if you can all help me out! Thanks!

This year the giveaway will run differently for the Summer Book Club! Please be sure to return each week to get the answer to that weeks question - you can join the giveaway & the book club at anytime during the 5 weeks that this event runs.... so stay tuned & make sure you return each Tuesday or Wednesday to join in!

Fern Valley: A Collection of Short Stories

Fern Valley: A Collection of Short Stories

Fern Valley: A Collection of Short Stories
by Aileen Stewart
ISBN: 9781617395277
$10.07 (paperback)
$ 8.39  (kindle)

About the book:
Follow the adventures of delightful young farm animals who are just like you. Fern Valley is home to a group of wonderful animals who have fun and face some of the same problems children everywhere do. Roberta and Mildred Cornstalk are creative chickens dealing with the loss of their beloved granny, and they're looking for something to do to cheer them up. Want to know what adventures they find? Want to know what happens to Roberta and Mildred's brother, Edward, when he goes fishing, what birthday surprise is in store for Betsy Woolrich, or what lesson Kimmy Curlytail learns when she keeps something that isn't hers? Then follow this endearing cast of characters as they enjoy their time together and learn important lessons.

My thoughts:
This is a very cute book full of little stories ideal for transition times (riding in the car, waiting for a meal at the restaurant, bedtime, etc...). It reminded me a lot of some of the little stories by George MacDonald (The Princess and the Goblin particularly comes to mind) just for a slightly younger crowd. Perfect for kids 4 to about 7 years old some of the stories would be nice for beginning readers as well who can read without a lot of verbal help from mom/dad or teachers.

Many of the stories have character lessons in them about being kind to others, obedience, listening and more. Be sure to stick a copy in your purse or in the beach bag for little breaks.
Disclaimer: I was given a copy of the book to read & review on CCB. I was not required to write a positive review & no money exchanged hands. Thanks for reading CCB!

Summer MG Book Club on hold

Hello everyone!

Just wanted to give you all a headsup that CCB will be on a short (hopefully) hiatus until my computer gets fixed. That doesn't mean you won't see me occasionally - it just means I will have to make a trip to the library to update my blog and that won't be on a daily basis as the computers there (an the sniffing, sneezing, hacking patrons) drive me nuts!

Summer Book Club will continue as planned but it will be pushed back a couple weeks probably .... I'm going to have to write out my reviews and then come to the library to post the reviews.... To make it easier I think I'm going to run 1 giveaway and either do 1 very lucky winner or just draw all the winners at the same time.

Please stay tuned - I haven't figured out how I'm going to run the giveaways and advertise it yet...

So, please think kind thoughts and send helpful ideas to my FB page if you know how to fix my computer (got a message that it can't find my license for microsoft XP and the definitions were no where to be found....). I'm waiting to hear back from my computer guru but he just moved on Friday and the computer went down on Saturday so it might be a little while)

Chow! Arrivaderci (or however you spell it) - see ya later!

The 2013 Summer Survival Calendar.... saving mom's sanity!

2013 Summer Survival Calendar

The Confident Mom
♥ Empowering Moms - Strengthening Families - Embracing God's Design

Today I found a new blog & mom business (to me anyway) that enables MOMS's to be the BEST they can be. Susan Heid is a PCI Certified Parent Coach & also a Certified Family Manager Coach who has created a wonderful Summer Survival Calendar for parents to use to help plan their Summer Activities. You'll find all kinds of fun things like scavenger hunts, cookouts, waterfights, nature activities and so much more!

The calendar is MORE than just a calendar though. The file you download includes the 4 months of Summer Activities - as well as links to recipes, instructions, printables, crafts and leads to FREE community activities that may be available in your area!

Most of you know I run a small daycare in my home and saw ALL the fun things the kids and I did last year. This year is going to be even tighter on funds so we are going to need to do a lot more FREE things and I can't tell you how excited I was to see this calendar! It's exactly what I needed. Oh, I can still add all the fun activities that the Omaha Public Library offers FREE to the community (like puppet & magic shows, an anti-bullying class with one of the TaeKwondo schools in town, FREE movies, etc...) but this will make it so much easier!

2013 Summer Survival Calendar I received the Summer Calendar Bundle and the Action Guide which includes 10 Strategies for Your Best Summer Ever and an Audio Workshop that will help you get started to review here on CCB and showed it to my daycare kids (I have a 3, 5 and 8 year old I watch) and they were having great fun pouring over the calendars and picking out what they wanted to do. I personally liked all the links and all the extras that came with the Action Guide like the:
  • Summer Goals Worksheet
  • Ideas for Summer Fun checklist
  • Quiet Time Activities Worksheet
  • Important Summer Dates checklist
  • Standard Operating Procedures worksheet
  • Weekly Menu Planner/Grocery List
  • Summer Weekly Planner
  • Be Summer Organized Checklist
You can purchase this extremely affordable calendar for your family - or surprise your kids' Daycare Provider with a copy. I can tell you from experience how much providers appreciate a parent thinking about them. It can be so tough trying to plan activities that will keep kids involved and trying to spread them out for a range of ages can be extremely hard.

If you explore her website more you'll find all kinds of helpful organizational tools available too. There are a few that have me intrigued, especially these:

(yeah, yeah I know.... schools not out yet! LOL)

Teaching your kids to Serve Others with Adventures in Odyssey!

"...the path toward building selfless, confident children is to help and encourage them toward a growing and thriving faith in God. And that includes obedience to what God teaches - not because it makes kids feel good, although it often does - but because they're following God's instructions to love Him and serve others. That builds a faith they can count on and carry with them into adulthood ~ which is the greatest gift any parent can bestow on their child."  ~ from Why Serve (link at the bottom of post)

With Summer just around the corner this is the ideal time to encourage your kids to Serve others on their own or as a family. To help you do this, Adventures in Odyssey is providing the tools for families to make it easier to teach this very important Character Skill.

There are many ways that parents can teach their kids to serve others.
1) They can set up a lemonade stand and give the proceeds to a needy family.
2) They can collect cans and recycle them to help clean their neighborhood up ~ and again give the proceeds to the local city mission or even save up the money and use it go get mittens & hats to donate to the needy.
3) They can volunteer to babysit for a single mom who is financially strapped and would benefit from saving childcare costs - or just a night out for a little R&R.

What ideas does your family have?

Adventures In Odyssey presents A.C.T.S.! – A Call To Serve. Join thousands of kids across the country making a commitment to serve your family, your community and even your world!

This summer they are joining in with christian bookstores across the country, inviting kids to participate in a Summer of Service. They're promoting this biblical message:

"When you serve, everybody wins." encouraging kids to serve their families, their communities and their world. Whether it's baking cookies for an elderly neighbor or putting together a care package for missionaries overseas, kids will discover that serving can be a blast!

The A.C.T.S. (A Call To Service) challenge and contest:
Kids who join A.C.T.S. can pick up a service log and collect fun character stickers for hours served at participating bookstores throughout the summer, or download a serving log online @ At the end of summer, kids can record and upload a short video telling how they serve and why they'd like to become an Adventures in Odyssey Ambassador.

100 winners will receive the brand new AIO Album and after online voting, 2 grand prize winners (a boy and a girl) will get to travel on an exciting Good-Goers Mission Based Adventure trip to another country with a parent! The out-of-country destination will be announced on a live podcast May 22 - hosted by AIO actors Katie Leigh (Connie) and Chris Anthony (Chris)  ~ which you can watch at You don't want to miss it!

Book Blast: Meg the Egg

ABOUT THE BOOK: Meg finds the outside world a bit too loud and far too scary! So, she’s going to stay inside her safe white shell, thank you very much. But then the Howl breaks into the barn and steals Mother Hen! What is she supposed to do, still holed up in that egg of hers? She can’t run and she certainly can’t fly. Well, never get between a chick and her momma, cause this little bird’s got a can-do spirit and a whole lot of courage that she didn’t know she had before!

A tale of self discovery that speaks to all children’s fears of the unknown, Ms. Borg delivers a great read-aloud resource for parents and teachers alike.
