Vanishing Cultures

Lee and Low has a wonderful series about Vanishing Cultures from around the world. This series of 7 books focuses on children in other countries and their lives. Each book opens with a child sitting with someone in their family or perhaps the elders of their community telling them a story. As the book continues your kids will learn about their home life, what kind of houses they live in, the clothing they wear, the chores they do, diet, their religion and what they believe, where their peoples come from and even a party or holiday they have.

The author, Jan Reynolds, spends time in their communities and using pictures she has taken while visiting she tells the story. The children in the books are real children, best friends or siblings. She concludes the story by telling us about the "real" family that the book was based on.

The books written at a 2nd-3rd grade level are beautiful. They make wonderful read aloud books for preschoolers (age 4-5 yrs depending on attention span) and are great for intermediate to advanced readers reading to younger children.

Each page features large photos with beautiful detail showing daily life. You learn about the habitat in the area, animals (and what they are used for), you see the families in traditional clothing and learn about the food they eat and where they sleep. It's a wonderful way to introduce another community to your children.

If you go on Lee and Low's website you'd find these in the Homeschool section of their store but I think they would be perfect in the home or at school. Lee and Low provides FREE Active Learner Classroom Guides visit their Teacher's Section and they also provide Helpful resources in the Administrators section.

You can purchase the Vanishing Cultures books on Lee and Low for $16.95 (Hardcover) or $7.95 (Paperback). They are truly beautiful and a great addition to any home or school library.

    1. I love to read and learn about different cultures and I think this book would be a great way to get my grandchildren interested in other cultures as well. Thank you for sharing this great book review.
