My Royal Pain Quest

It's funny looking back on old reviews and seeing the difference in posts from a couple years ago versus today's version. Today's review is a sequel to a book I reviewed in Oct 2010 and I think I'm going to have to go back, reread that book and update my review. You can read my review of My Sparkling Misfortune (Bk 1 in this series) here - I've reposted it on this blog so you can read it. =D

~ Book Review & Giveaway

My Royal Pain Quest (series)
Sequel to My Sparkling Misfortune
ISBN: 978-1467919968
$ 9.99 (paperback)
$ 2.99 (Kindle)

About the book:
How far would a villain go to help a friend? Lord Arkus of Blackriver Castle thinks doing three heroic deeds is a bit too far. Not only it’s plain detestable, it can ruin his reputation and get him in trouble with the Villains League. On the other hand, it’s not like he’s got friends to spare. And losing the League’s membership isn’t the end of the world, one can always work independently.

Introducing Lord Arkus:

My Thoughts:
I think I actually liked the sequel better than my original review of the 1st book in the series. I had some trouble getting 'into' both books but with persistence I found a book I really enjoyed. Bk 2 ~ My Royal Pain Quest is a continuation of Lord Arkus' story only this time the book opens with him having taken on the responsibility of Jarvi the Sparkling in Book 1 after he is injured and basically in a coma. Up until this book opens Lord Arkus has taken it upon himself to find a way to wake up Jarvi and help him heal from an unknown injury.

He comes across a series of stories that talk about a way that may help Jarvi - unfortunately no one knows if it's a fairy tale or if it will really work. The solution? Lord Arkus needs to go on a quest to do 3 heroic deeds - unfortunately he hasn't any idea what those are and how to find them. Along the way he meets new friends, takes on the responsibility to help old enemies and ends up meeting a special young woman with a secret of her own.

This is a FUN adventure story for kids 9+. There's lots of adventure, magic & mystical creatures and more! After you get over the initial "introduction" of the book it speeds up and with the many new characters the book gets better and better. I can't help but wonder what's going to happen in the next book when it comes out (and there will be at least 1 more book)!

Buy It ~ It's Great for Guys or Gals!

You can purchase a copy of My Sparkling Misfortune on
Amazon for 9.85 (paperback) or 2.99 (Kindle)

The Happiness Tree

 ~ Book Review

by Andrea Alban Gosline
Illustrated by Lisa Burnett Bossi
ISBN: 978-0312370176
$10.91

About the book:

"Everything good begins with me,
the acorn told it's mother tree,
and drifted on the dancing breeze,
to find a cloak of golden leaves...."

So begins the magical journey from seed of hope to forest of happiness! Andrea Gosline invites tree lovers of all ages to discover life's treu gifts - peace, courage, compassion, gratitude, love, tolerance... Lisa Bossi's "gorgeous jewel-toned illustrations featuring anthropomorphized trees are sure to be pored over by young readers, who will be taken in by their fairy-forest quality." (Kirkus Reviews) Included are lyrical tree bios, an index of state trees, and a pledge to care for our precious forest friends.

My thoughts:
This book is for older preschoolers to readers who are comfortable reading on their own. You child will learn about 10 different trees and watch them grow from seed to full grown tree throughout many seasons. Each of the trees tale is told in lyrical verse beginning with the fall of one acorn before winter, through the long winter's sleep and then as the seed begins to grow above the ground in the spring. From there we learn about each tree's gift ~ there's hope, love, courage, gratitude, peace, compassion, tolerance, generosity, honesty and happiness. Each of these gifts is a character trait that parents attempt to teach their child as they grow up and hope to see some part of as they become adults.

Teaching ideas:
I was looking at The Happiness Tree from a viewpoint of teaching these character traits and also trying to come up with a way to help children remember each trait through art.

1) Break down each tree's verse and work on memorizing it's verse during the week. As an example for the Oak Tree ~ you will learn about Hope. Talk about what Hope means with your child. Learn the verse associated with this tree ~ quote it as you wake your child in the morning and after their nap. Encourage them to memorize it and quote it with you.

"I welcome morning's ringing light,
dream with crescent moons at night,
expect the joy that rainbows bring,
anticipate unfurling spring."
I begin.

2) Go for a walk and look for acorns and oak trees. Bring home a few oak leaves and put them around your house to decorate. Preserve them between wax paper, let your child cut them out (or you do it if their to little) and help them create a mobile to hang in their room using a couple of oak twigs.

You can break down a verse and learn about a tree and the character trait associated with it each week. Begin to teach younger children to memorize verses (just like you do nursery rhymes) and quote them throughout the day. If you see your child being courageous, compassionate (kind) quote the verse as an encouragement to them.

Learning to quote verses in preschool will also help your child as they begin to need to start memorizing spelling words, math tables, history facts - that part of their brain will already be strengthened for these kinds of tasks.

Other activities you can do ~ use found objects in nature to collage. put a big branch on your wall and use string, yarn and netting to display seeds, flowers, leaves, nests (I'd make sure there aren't any bugs, etc), pods, etc - try to find items that tie into the different trees you are studying each week.

Autumn Leaves are Falling (scroll down)
Fall Activities - Rubbings, printing, a sock walk
Parable of the Sower Envelope Book - Mark 4:1-9 w/ questions

Loved this book ~ loved the illustrations. The website is an awesome tool for parents and teachers to use for ideas on how to use these books as learning tools. I personally would recommend using it for kids Kindergarten and up ~ but you can also use it as I mentioned above for kids 3+. Just break it down so it's not to much in a setting. You'll find at the back of the book an explanation of the 10 different trees and the character trait they each stand for. You'll find a comprehensive list of state trees, a pledge and encouragement to plant a Happiness Tree of your own on Arbor Day.

Visit the author's website and take time to explore. You'll find a store with prints from their books, parenting & children's books, teaching guides, and more.

I received a copy of The Happiness Tree from the author in exchange for a review. I was not required to have a positive review and no money exchange hands. Thanks!

Orange Sherbet ~ Delicious

Orange Sherbet
Release May 15th

For our 2nd Children's Music Monday I am featuring Orange Sherbet which features songs about foods that helps kids want to try new foods through fun, upbeat, jazzy music. This 17 song CD features a celebration of foods from the 4 seasons - Spring, Summer, Fall and Winter - and it also teaches them about growing and preparing foods.

When I first heard Delicious I loved it - it reminded me of the Farmer's Market and all the veggies and fun smells & stuff you see. It turns out Orange Sherbet has been known to sing at the Farmer's Market! The music is fun, features kids learning about great food and encourages them to try new things.

Tamsen Fynn says:
"Everyone who worked on the CD needed regular lunch breaks, because we all got so hungry listening to the tempting descriptions of rice and beans, sauteed vegetables or al dente pasta. This might be the first time a child who hears our music wants to taste bok choy, rutabaga and mustard greens!"

Delicious is going to be released on 5/15 and you will be able to purchase it on CDBaby.com and Amazon.com.

family fun magazine camping recipes Pour Capri Sun into popsicle mold, add sliced fruit, then freeze!
(Click the pictures for link to the Recipes)

Here are a few ideas on how to get kids to eat and enjoy FRESH veggies and fruit this summer!
- Provide them with a plastic knife so they can help you cut softer veggies like zucchini, green beans, yellow squash & celery (you do the harder things like carrots). You may want to cut bigger foods in half so there is a flat side to hold the veggie flat to make it easier to cut.
- Read Stone Soup, listen to it on the CD and then make your own pot of Stone Soup! Activity Guide
- Take your children with you to the Farmers Market on Saturday or Sunday and let them each pick out a veggie or fruit they would like to try that week. The neat thing about the Farmer's Market is that often you'll find heirloom veggies that are different from anything you'll find in the store. There are purple sweet peppers, tomatoes in all kinds of colors, wheatgrass drinks, and more!

Soup Day by Melissa Iwai

Soup Day
Soup Day
by Melissa Iwai
Age 4-8
ISBN-13: 978-0805090048
$11.04 (hardback)

Soup Day was written by Melissa Iwai last year about a little girl who goes with her mother to pick up vegetables at the store and then helps her make soup for dinner.

I help Mommy pick out the vegetables,
She says it's important to choose the
freshest ones with the brightest colors.

I loved this book as it shares the experience the little girl and her mother have cooking together in the kitchen. During the story she describes the recipe by using descriptive words like 3 long orange carrots - and each carrot is bright orange, individually drawn and your kids can stop and point to each and count them out. She talks about how each vegetable is washed and cut for the soup. "The celery and onions become tiny squares." She even tells us how she got to cut the mushrooms and zucchini with mommy's help (and a plastic knife).

At the end of the book is the recipe for the vegetable soup she made with her mommy's help. Melissa has put together a great video with tips for making the soup with your child and she also tells us about different concepts such as measuring, colors, counting, etc... I also loved how the book uses very bright colors and big shapes for older toddlers and preschoolers ~ and the pages are wonderfully thick making it easier for kids to turn the pages with ease.

Sylvan Dell Publishing ~ Spring New Releases

Children'sBookWeek.jpg

HomeCave.phpHome in the Cave
by Janet Halfmann
ISBN: 9781607185314
$9.95 (paperback) $17.95 (hardback)

About the Book:
Baby Bat loves his cave home and never wants to leave it. While practicing flapping his wings one night, he falls, and Pluribus Packrat rescues him. They then explore the deepest, darkest corners of the cave where they meet amazing animals—animals that don’t need eyes to see or colors to hide from enemies. Baby Bat learns how important bats are to the cave habitat and how other cave-living critters rely on them for their food. Will Baby Bat finally venture out of the cave to help the other animals? Age 4-8 yrs

Baby Bat is adorable. There is nothing more to say - except that little kids are going love this story and I'm sure you are going to be reading it over and over. Home in the Cave is a good introduction to beginning science for 3-4 years old. While all the other baby bats are excitedly learning how to fly and talking about the adventures their moms are having while hunting in the cave - little Baby Bat gets more afraid as he imagines all the dangers and scary things that are out in the big world. One day he falls and lands on the cave floor where he learns that their are amazing things in the world and with the help of a blind rat he explores not only the cave but the big world outside.

(This one was easily my favorite of the 5 books that I reviewed although all of them were wonderful. The illustrations and the story are memorable and fun and will be a favorite of the children in your life.)

Beatrix the beaver longs to be good at something. Her brother Bevan is an expert at repairing the lodge with mud and twigs. Her sister Beverly is a superb swimmer and underwater gymnast. What makes Beatrix stand out? Three Little Beavers
by Jean Heilprin Diehl
ISBN: 9781607185338
$9.95 (paperback) $17.95 (hardback)

About the Book:
Beatrix the beaver longs to be good at something. Her brother Bevan is an expert at repairing the lodge with mud and twigs. Her sister Beverly is a superb swimmer and underwater gymnast. What makes Beatrix stand out? One day, she runs away by swimming up the creek and finds some fresh garden plants to eat, and tasty trees to gnaw. When her siblings set off to find her, all Three Little Beavers wind up trapped! It takes some simple engineering on the part of the humans who set the traps, and Beatrix’s discovery of her special talents, for the people and beavers to finally find a way to live in harmony. Age 4-8 yrs

My Thoughts:
This is a cute story of 3 little beavers with 3 very different personalities. Two of the beavers are outgoing and do everything right and the last beaver is constantly asked "why can't you be like your brother & sister" (sound familiar?). Discouraged and sad Beatrix decides to run away and in the process discovers that her ability to stay calm and think during a bad situation will help her and her brother/sister get home again.

The Three Little Beavers is a great introduction to the river habitat and how Beavers help the environment and others by being persistent. Your children will learn what they eat, how they can see underwater when they swim, how and why they build dams, box trapping and why people use this method of trapping animals instead of killing these animals.

I am in love with the illustrations in this book. Big, expressive and filled with emotion your children will connect with them immediately and will want to study each picture to see what's happening. Check it out:

When a volcano explodes, many plants and animals die. Gopher survives in his burrow. How does he help life return to the mountain? Scientists spent years observing life returning to Mount St. Helens. This fictionalized story is based on their surprising findings on how life returns to a destroyed habitat.Gopher to the Rescue
A Volcano Recovery Story
by Terry Catasus Jennings
ISBN: 9781607181415
$9.95 (paperback) $17.95 (hardback)

About the Book:
The forest animals are surprised when a volcano suddenly explodes, covering the land in gritty, warm ash and rocks that make it unlivable for many plants and animals. Gopher survives in his underground burrow with food to eat. How does Gopher help bring life back to the mountain? Scientists spent years observing life returning to the mountain following the eruption of Mount St. Helens on May 18, 1980. This fictionalized story is based on their surprising observations of how life returns to an area that has been totally changed or destroyed. Age 4-9 yrs

My Thoughts:
Gopher has a big job to do! Come learn how the forest, the animals and the ground recovers and heals when a Volcano erupts. I learned quite a bit as I read this book. You don't think about how long and what a major job it is for the environment to recover after a big event like a volcano erupts, a river floods or a forest fire occurs.

Listen to: Gopher to the Recue
(in Spanish & English)

The book opens with the animals sensing that something is about to happen. Of course they don't know what it is but when the ground starts shaking and a loud BOOM happens they flee. Some of the animals don't make it and die and those that live underground (gophers, insects, worms, etc) continue on as though nothing happened. Gopher to the rescue does a wonderful job in walking children (and grownups too) through a timeline of the healing of the habitat, how the underground animals/insects dig tunnels and their waste feeds the earth to enrich it and help it grow new vegetation - as time goes by little by little animals and other creatures begin to return.

A wonderful book that older preschoolers will enjoy. Early elementary children will enjoy it also and there are activities and explanations about what volcanoes are and why they erupt, natural disasters and habitat changes.

GreatDivide.phpThe Great Divide
by Suzanne Slade
ISBN: 9781607185307
$9.95 (paperback) $17.95 (hardback)

About the Book:
Animals, like people, enjoy spending time with their friends and family. Many groups of animals have their own unique names. Did you know that a group of gorillas is called a band? And a bunch of billy goats is a tribe? Following in the footsteps of Multiply on the Fly (multiplication), What’s New at the Zoo? (addition) and What’s the Difference? (subtraction), this rhythmic, fun-to-read-aloud book introduces children to division as they conquer bands, tribes, mobs and more.

My Thoughts:
The Great Divide is a great addition to Sylvan Dell's Math series. Each of the books has a wonderful story/verse that teaches children through story problems how to answer math problems. Check this out:

Nine hungry leopards
waking up from sleep.
Three groups are on the prowl.
How many in each leap?

With this story problem your children learn: the name of the animal group (leap), how many leopards, what the leopards & the picture shows them the type of habitat they live in: snow, hills, the leopards coloring allows them to blend in with the snow somewhat for protection while hunting.

Penelope Parker lives with penguins! Short ones, tall ones; young and old—the penguins are from all over the Southern Hemisphere including some that live near the equator! Do the penguin antics prove too much for her to handle? Children count and then compare and contrast ten different penguin species as they learn geography. The Penguin Lady
by Carol A Cole
ISBN: 9781607185369
$9.95 (paperback) $17.95 (hardback)

About the Book:

Do the penguin antics prove too much for her to handle? Children count and then compare and contrast the different penguin species as they learn geography. Age 4-9 yrs

My Thoughts:
This one is a cute book for preschoolers and it's all about penguins.  There are lots of counting penguins, seeing what penguins eat, if they like it cold or warm ~ and lots and lots of black & white in this book! This one was probably my least favorite of the 5 books I've listed here but it's still a cute book that I think younger kids will enjoy and kids who can read should enjoy reading about animals that most kids like to learn about. I will tell you though that many of the words (Rockhopper, Galapagos Islands will be tough for beginning readers who need to sound out words as they go).

About all the books in the Sylvan Dell Publishing line:

It's hard to believe but Summer is almost here. It's time to start thinking about how you are going to keep your kids learning this summer. Children who do not read during the summer lose up to 30% of the skills they learned in school the previous year. So, to help parents out each year Classic Children's Books promotes and hosts a HUGE event called the Middle Grade Summer Book Club.

Middle Grade Fiction Book Club.egg on Aviary

Classic Children's Books is dedicated to encouraging strong family relationships through reading together. I encourage parents to read to their children - even through elementary school and into Jr High if your kids will let you. Read High Quality Books - what do I mean by High Quality?

- When books are read to children - language development and auditory discrimination are stimulated. They continue long into the Jr High level and I would dare to say into Senior High. It is so important that your children are reading books that insist and contain strong language skills that are descriptive, explanatory and not just conversational. These skills don't stop in Kindergarten when children are beginning to read & that's why it's
so important that you DON'T stop reading to your children just because they
are supposed to be learning to read.

I'm really excited to announce this year each author is offering a book or a series of books to the families participating in Summer Book Club. This year the following books are participating ~ and you can just click the picture or the title below to order your books:
