About the book:

As her mom gets sicker, Erica quickly learns that juggling family, friends, school, and fulfilling a promesa is stressful, but with a little bit of hope and a lot of love, she just might be able to figure it out.

Confetti Girl author Diana Lopez returns with this sweet, funny, and utterly honest story about being a girl in a world full of good (and bad) surprises.    My thoughts: Ask My Mood Ring How I Feel was another book I wasn't sure I wanted to read. This wonderful book came with another book that I had requested and I wasn't planning on including it with the Best of 2013 Middle Grade reads until I read it ~ it wasn't at all what I was expecting.
This book opens with your typical, everyday 7th grade, hyper boy vigilent teen ager focused on what all little 7th grade girls are aware of. You have boy/clothes/when am I going to reach the "close encounter of the #1, 2, 3 or 4th degree (involving boys - but you already figured that out right?)" crazy girls (plus one boy in their group who is just starting to be aware of Erica and she hasn't a clue (of course).

But then Erica's life changes - her mother is diagnosed with breast cancer. I was very pleased with how the author didn't brush over the subject, worked through Erica's emotions, her dad's worry about his wife and Erica's little sister's almost OCD counting and need to clean. There is a LOT of information, emotions and kids are given some tools they can use with major events in their lives. Most of all I loved how Erica stepped forward and helped around the house - taking care of the cleaning and her little brother as best as a 13 year old can. In many ways she took over much of the organizing of their home - and the resulting consequence would be eye opening for kids & their families.

I was very impressed with this book all around. The only thing I was a little un-impressed about was the parents in the book take the kids to a "shrine" where people make promises to the "Virgen de San Juan del Valle" in order to heal the people in their lives. The parents in the book take the kids there and have their kids make a promesa but of course don't do a good job of making sure the girls understand that nothing they do can heal their mother. Instead of putting their fear and trust in God they turn to promises, the Virgin Mary and works to hopefully heal their mom.

Parents should take the time to read the book first or at least read it with their daughters. Talk about how God is there to support us and while He can heal us sometimes he doesn't choose to. Talk about how we can help others, support and encourage each other and how we can let our friends know we are there if they need us. I would of LOVED to see a list of discussion questions with this book. It's outstanding and should be on each library shelf & in each school.

There is a strong hispanic presence in this book and you'll find some cultural references throughout the book, not just in language, but in religion and this provides a great opportunity to discuss cultural differences and different beliefs and thoughts as well.

My thoughts:

I love the idea of a kid knowing what she (or he) wants to be when they grow up. Lily Robbins MD is one of those kids - she loves helping others and making a difference in someone's life. You'll find Lily reaching out to others, learning more than just first aid and trying to find ways she can succeed in reaching her goal.... to be a doctor when she grows up.

Lily and her friends are wonderful kids... yes, they're all boy crazy and kinda strange as all middle grade kids are but I really liked them. Each kid in the book has their own special personality and each of Lily's friends seem to be the kind of kids I'd want my own daughter to be involved with. Lily has a passion for well a variety of things. Her family knows her as the kid that can't stick with one passion so when she asks for CPR & First Aid lessons after she helps a little boy with internal injuries when he is in a bad car accident she decides "I want to be a dr when I grow up" her parents tell her "we'll see" and lets see if your still interested in 6 months. Lily's dad ends up finding a class for girls 10-13 at his fitness center and when it turns out that it's about puberty and periods (etc) she decides she doesn't want to finish the class & guess what mom & dad make her stick with it.

Lilly Robbins MD is all about preadolescent girls, BFF's and angst girl style. It's about learning about your body, changes and middle school. Boys too. I wouldn't have a problem handing this book off to a 4th grade girl (and up) to read. The information about the changes a girl goes through is clear cut, well put and in words your girls will be comfortable with. I loved the idea of having a celebration when a little girl turns into a Mini Woman - sure wish someone had done that for me when I was 9!

New Series: Minnie & Daisy ~ Best Friends Forever!

Have you ever wondered what Minnie and Daisy’s lives were like before Mickey and Donald?  Minnie and Daisy were friends long before they met their dashing duck and magical mouse, and they went through all the trials and tribulations of growing up just like all girls do.

They also now have a FUN new series of chapter books for preteen girls. There are the usual boy crazy kids (all cartoon characters of course) with the usual events in their little lives. Minnie and Daisy's new series is very appealing to girls 8 and up. The pages are colorful and filled with "snapshots" of their lives. There are segments of text that highlighted in different colors so the words stand out and the situations in the story match most of what your girls are going through. I loved how Daisy is the sports minded character (and she is definitely a character) and Minnie is the creative one. She loves to sew, bake, babysits and wants to help her friends. The little arguments they get into are reminiscent of the little arguments all girls get into during 5th-7th grades ~ but their methods of making up can help your girls learn how to build and strengthen their relationships with their friends.

.... and there will be 2 additional books will be coming out in July.

Another new surprise from Daisy & Minnie is their new magazine! My little 8 year old daycare girl snapped these up right away... your girls will read about friendship, do crafts, learn about their favorite music, play games and take quizzes. My thoughts:
Leviathan. I'll be honest I really didn't know what to expect when I received this book. The write up I received from the publisher & the back of the book sounded great and very interesting since it was about history and the lives of people who made an effort to make a difference in the lives of others but when I saw the cover I was like ho hum and then I began to read...

The writing and the dialogue weren't what caught my attention but the Civil War background and the story of the people who helped save escaping slaves is wonderful. It's a great way to introduce young people to that sad period of American History and a perfect opportunity for parents to open discussion for how we can help others who need help in so many ways. There are sections of the book that take the reader to a battle field and the story overlaps with actual battles that are about to take place and show the emotions and feelings of a 15 year old bugler during the war and some of the other soldiers, there is the story of a woman and her "staff" (yes, she refused to call them slaves or servants even) and how she set into motion a group of men who committed their lives to keeping secret how she helped slaves escape.

This is a very interesting story and I would love to read The Sacred Mountain which is the first book in this series. Very very interesting. I would say this book is for kids that have strong reading skills and the ability to stick to what they are reading. I found the dialogue a little hard to read personally but I think kids would definitely connect with this story if they enjoy history and "true story" type books about heroes.

This handy book can be used during the holidays, on vacation, or just to fill the time on a rainy day.

My thoughts:
I am excited about the opportunities now available for preschoolers in the world of activity books. I have looked for activity books at Walmart and other stores and always turn away. It usually seems like they are heavy on the stickers & the price and that is about it and it doesn't help the kids won't even look at them.. Lois Rock consistently turns out fun activity books that are heavy on "reading", interaction and they are educational and encourage reading comprehension (this is a HUGE plus in my mind) as well. The pictures are really cute and I'll admit I enjoy looking at them as much as my 3 year old daycare child does (and she picks them up to look at over and over again). She considers these HER books and even after the stickers are done she enjoys reading the stories and doing the puzzles and activities in the book. These books end up in my car for the kids to look at on drives or while we are waiting to pick up one child or another after school or on long trips to preschool playtime or some other fun activity.

I would love to see more of these books - there are stories for Adam & Eve, Daniel & the Lions, David & Goliath (see my review here), Joshua & the Battle of Jericho, Easter (see my review here), the Christmas story and so many others that can be added to this series. I would also love to see other more "secular" type activity books written - perhaps Kregel and the authors in this series could come up with some fun story/activity books to do a side series to this one perhaps for the next age level (beginning readers).

Use this series for stocking stuffers, easter baskets - stock up on them for birthday gifts. Your kids will definitely grab them to give to their little friends. Add some of those new twist up crayons, markers and drawing paper and you are set.

My thoughts:
Challenge on the Hill of Fire is a take off of the story of Elijah and the Prophets of Baal where he challenges them to get their god to light their sacrifice - and of course only the true God could do that (1 Kings 18:16-39). This story takes place in Ireland during the struggle between the druids and Patritius (St Patrick) when he is trying to share the gospel with the Irish People and he ends up rescuing Beth and Patrick from slavers. The time period is a violent period and this book is a good introduction to the persecution Christians have dealt with over the centuries. Your children will have questions and it opens up opportunities for you to teach your children about being kind to others, standing up for what's right and showing them how the true message of God & Jesus is about peace, love and the incredible gift God has given us through Jesus his Son.

About the book:

My thoughts:
Once again, we have a fun action packed new book for young readers who are just starting to get involved in chapter books with a little meat on them. This particular book takes place during the Roman age and involves dragons, a roman guard who believes in Christos (Christ) and is being persecuted by his superior in the army. This roman guard stands up for Beth & Patrick when they are threatened with being put in the stocks for "sneaking" into port and his superior blames a innocent merchant for bringing them and tries to tax him for something he didn't do.

The main theme of this book is bullying and standing up for what you believe in. It opens up with Beth feeling bad because she didn't defend a little friend from school who is being bullied ~ Whit sends her and Patrick back in time to find out what it feels like to be on the receiving end and to see what happens when you stand up for others.

As usual, outstanding story. It's a little wooden but kids aren't going to notice that. The story moves fast and your children will learn a little about history at the same time. There is a nice little Q&A in the back of the book as well as a puzzle and a very short interview with the daughter of one of the authors.   My thoughts: I have to say I LOVED The Cats of Tanglewood Forest. The writing is beautiful and the images I received in my mind's eye exquisite. You have the story of a little farm girl who is being raised by her aunty, who speaks to the forests animals and ends up turning into a kitten. Her adventures as she travels the forest, meets a witch (or two), her experience living with the Bear People are exciting and draw you along in the story. I ended up staying up into the wee morning hours reading to finish this story. The end of the book is not at all what I expected and the choice that Lillian has to make in the end of the book would be very hard to make - it will make your kids stop and think "what would they do if they had to make the same choice?".   The writing for this story remind me of The Water Baby or even some of George MacDonald (Sir Gibbie, The Princess & the Goblin) or even CS Lewis's wonderful Narnia Chronicles. This would be a great story to while away a slow summer afternoon (or several) or a rainy/stormy day - or even a long trip on the airplane..
