Howard B Wigglebottom is an award winning series about a little bunny learning BIG lessons that all children must learn to make it in the world. In each book Howard learns a lesson about: lying, listening, obeying, getting dirty, belonging, sportsmanship, sharing, bullies or how too much of a good thing can be bad.

This week we are featuring Howard B Wigglebottom and the Monkey on His Back or "A Tale about Telling the Truth" and I am officially listing this wonderful, gentle teaching series as a Classic Series for Children.

My Thoughts:
How many of you are having a hard time explaining what lying is? Do your children understand that lying can cause people NOT to trust them and that once they tell a lie it's hard to not tell another one?

In Howard B Wigglebottom and the Monkey on His Back Howard learns that each time he lies there is a monkey on his back that gets bigger and bigger and bigger. And he feels sadder and sadder and sadder until finally he decides that he is not going to lie anymore and that he needs to confess his lies - with each lie that monkey gets smaller and smaller until he is packs his bags and goes away.

Your children will learn in this book:
  • What lying is
  • Why they may feel like they need to lie
  • Why they should apologize for lying
  • How to apologize when they have done something wrong
Best of all, I like the gentle method the author uses to teach what lying is and why it is wrong AND to help your child remember the lessons they have learned there is a handy FREE poster for you to print out and hang on the refrigerator or in your child's room.

The author and his team of volunteers have taken this series a few steps further - they have provided parents and teachers tools to help them teach children these valuable lessons. They provide you with animated books for your children to read during center time or quiet time, posters, songs and discussion questions that you can use to help your children understand the lesson being taught.

You can purchase any of the 10 Howard B Wigglebottom books at They are a wonderful addition to your family library and would be great to add to your church, school or city library too. And they make a great birthday gift!

Normally each book is $15 - right now they are on sale for $6 each or all 10 for $50! I have no idea how long the sale is running so you might consider stocking up for the coming year & all the birthdays, parties, Christmas/Hanukkah and other gift giving needs you & your family may have.
